With spaces vs. without spaces
'With spaces' counts every character including spaces and line breaks. 'Without spaces' leaves those out. Check which one your form or platform uses.
Bytes
Bytes measure storage size. In UTF-8, English letters and numbers are 1 byte, most accented letters are 2, and Korean, Chinese and Japanese characters are 3. Emoji are usually 4.

Is my text sent to a server?+
No. Counting happens entirely in your browser, and recent history is saved only in this browser. On a shared computer, press 'Clear history' when you're done.
Why is the count different from another site?+
Sites differ in how they count line breaks and emoji. Some count an emoji as 2 characters. This counter counts what you see as one character.
